Blanket America: Bringing Back an American Tradition
When our ancestors crossed the oceans to reach the new land, they brought with them not just their families and a few meager possessions. They brought with them their own unique languages, styles and traditions. One tradition nearly every woman from every country brought with her was her own unique quilting pattern, fabric and color preferences. Eventually those traditions, patterns and preferences melded together and evolved into a truly American style of quilt called patchwork.
Soon, commemorative patchwork quilts became a new tradition. Major life events, such as engagements, were memorialized with quilts. With westward expansion came the advent of the state quilt. Political affiliations, union preferences and even wars were memorialized through statement blankets. Before women’s suffrage gave women the right to vote in elections, their preferences were stated through fabric, needle and thread.
Through high times and low times, our nation’s history can be tracked through quilts. During war time, patchwork colors tended to be duller and fabric quality lower. During times of peace and prosperity fabrics were brighter, patterns more intricate, quality of fabrics higher and richer and variety of fabrics greater. During the Roaring 20’s fine linen and silks were used to make crazy quilts.
When the Great Depression stuck ten years later, old flour sacks became the only fabrics available for making quilts. During political strife, strong statements were made. When labor unions became legal in the United States, many women made use of red, white and blue fabrics to show their support. During times of war nearly all women used red, white and blue fabrics when they were available in order to show their patriotic pride, appreciation and support of our troops. Today that tradition is no different.
The Patchwork Heritage quilt brings back many old American traditions from bygone eras. The face of the quilt is comprised of 13 different fabrics in hues of red, white and blue which represent our 13 original colonies. The reverse of the quilt is a subdued creamy beige color and features lady liberty standing proudly in the background. President Barak Obama’s inaugural address is printed on the foreground, with the now famous words “we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness” highlighted prominently. The Patchwork Heritage quilt benefits charity through a buy one, give one program. To learn more, visit patchwork.
The Patchwork Heritage quilt is bringing back an old American tradition of commemorative quilting. Blanket America is a new charitable organization who is implementing an innovative new concept of giving: buy one, give one.
About the Author
Blanket America is about more than blankets. It is about changing the way charity and business works. For every quilt sold, Blanket America will donate a blanket to an American in need.

Five-Head” Creek; and Fish Drugging In The Pacific $0.99 II had ridden all day through an endless vista ot ghostly grey gums and ironbarks, when I came in sight of the long wavering line of vivid green foliage which showed me that I had reached my destination–a roughly-built slab hut with a roof of corrugated iron. This place was to be my home for six months, and stood on the bank of Five-Head Creek, twenty-five miles from the rising city of Townsville in North Queensland.Riding up to the building, I got off my wearied, sweating horse, and, removing the saddle and my blanket and other impediments, led him to the creek to drink, and then hobbled and turned him loose to feed on the soft lush grass and reeds growing along the margin of the water. Then I entered the empty house, made a brief examination of it, and wondered how my mate would like living in such an apparently comfortless abode. |

National Football League (NFL), (352 U.S. 445, 1957), is a U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling that professional football, unlike professional baseball, was subject to antitrust laws. It was the third of three such cases heard by the Court in the 1950s involving the antitrust status of professional sports. Three justices dissented, finding the majority arbitrary and inconsistent in refusing football the exemption it had upheld five years previously in Toolson v. New York Yankees (). The majority admitted that the similarity between the two sports from a legal standpoint would probably have denied baseball the exemption as well were it sought afresh, but existing case law had tied their hands in the absence of any congressional action. While the NFL has secured some limited antitrust exemptions since through the legislative process, the lack of a blanket exemption due to this decis… More: |

1981 Irish Hunger Strike $58 The 1981 Irish hunger strike was the culmination of a five-year protest. The Troubles by Irish republican prisoners in Northern Ireland. The protest began as the blanket protest in 1976, when the British government withdrew Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. In 1978, after a number of attacks on prisoners leaving their cells to “slop out”, the dispute escalated into the dirty protest, where prisoners refused to wash and covered the walls of their cells with excrement. In 1980 seven prisoner participated in the first hunger strike, which ended after 53 days. The second hunger strike took place in 1981 and was a showdown between the prisoners and the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. One hunger striker, Bobby Sands, was elected as a Member of Parliament during the strike, prompting media interest from around the world. The strike was called off after ten prisoners had starved themselves to death- including Sands, whose funeral was attended by 100,000 people. The strike radicalised nationalist politics, and was the driving force that enabled Sinn Fein to become a mainstream political party. |

A Blanket Benediction $9.99 The Hessemans have become a much loved family through the historical novel, The Picnickers. Readers question, “What happened to all of them? How did life treat them?” The answer could be, “Quite well, thank you,” but that is far too simple. Each Picnicker, though bountifully blessed, met and was led through countless life struggles. As transpires in real life, we do not know the outcome of the next chapter as the last closes, but faith, hope, and charity live on. While The Picnickers tracked a real but fictionalized family, A Blanket Benediction spins off perhaps the most illusory of The Picnickers’ plot segments, becoming a work of absolute fiction. Still the Hesseman heart and soul persist. Once again, you are invited to accompany a northwesterly journey on which Callie follows a passion and then veers off into her own orbit. Genetics cast aside, she bears the banner of pioneer determination, curiosity, and adventure, supported by Clint, whose background provides an unlikely complement. As a team, they come to personify the triumph of the fruits of the Spirit over human frailty and failure. Soon to come Miracle Downs, third in a series by the same author, will bring to life a trial of the picnicker “faith that will not shrink” as Clint and Callie realize his life dream and fall in love with their challenging, yet gifted, special child. |

A Collecting Trip To Columbia, South America $9.17 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:Cost Of Trip Our expenses were about $650 each, but, as this included a number of unnecessary purchases, $600 may be considered a fair estimate of the cost. The round trip fare from New York or New Orleans to Santa Marta on the United Fruit Company steamers, including meals, was $180. Hotel rates at Santa Marta and Barranquilla were $2 a day; at El Banco the rate was $1.20 a day. The first class charge from Cienaga to Barranquilla was $3.50, with stateroom $i extra. The round trip first class tare from Barranquilla to La Dorado without stateroom was $30 on one line of steamers and $60 on another line. On the first line the stateroom adds about forty per cent to the cost; on the second line about twenty per cent—that is, stateroom charges are about the same on both lines. We had staterooms from Barranquilla to El Banco, but at no time thereafter, as we really preferred sleeping on deck and the shower bath rooms sufficed for shaving and changing clothing. Sleeping on deck, however, requires retiring at a certain hour, when all the cots are brought out and distributed over the deck, and arising at a certain hour in order that the deck may be cleared for the day. Travelling on the river with frequent stopovers adds very little if any to the fare, as this is equitably figured on the basis of leagues between points. Mozos such as we employed for carrying our collecting outfits and lunches charged from sixty cents to one dollar a day. Carriages in cities for ourselves and several pieces of baggage cost us usually about $i a trip. Notes On Equipment And Collecting Methods Extra Equipment.—At the hotels at Barranquilla one can arrange for the purchase of a mosquito net, a light blanket and a pillow for use on the river boats. We carried these necessary articles in an old |

A Culture of Corruption: Everyday Deception and Popular Discontent in Nigeria $26.95 “By all measurements Nigeria, richly endowed with natural and human resources and the United States’ fifth largest source of imported oil, should be one of the most prosperous of the world’s developing countries. Instead it is one of the poorest. No one has done a better job than Daniel Jordan Smith of showing how and why the cancer of corruption has hobbled the giant of Africa. A Culture of Corruption is an absorbing cultural study by an anthropologist who deeply cares about the society into which he has married.”–Walter Carrington, former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria”This is a path-breaking study of a challenging topic for African studies, anthropology, development economics, and social sciences in general. If any country in Africa should be able to join the world’s newly industrialized countries, it should be Nigeria in view of its size and its oil wealth. The common explanation of its constant failure to do so is corruption. The great merit of this book is to show that corruption has many faces in everyday life. The term is all too often used as a blanket notion. Smith shows how misleading this is by studying it as a daily reality with manifold expressions. The book fills an urgent need. We must better understand the reasons why Africa’s giant is stagnating if we want to be able to say something about the continent’s present-day crisis.”–Peter Geschiere, University of Amsterdam”Nigeria is known globally as a center for scams of a variety and audacity that are astounding to those who trust that their own societies and economies run according to ‘the rules.’ In A Culture of Corruption, Daniel Jordan Smith draws on many years of living in Nigeria as an NGO representative and anthropologist to cast a very wide net around Nigerian corruption, to include contemporary official and unofficial malfeasance of all kinds. His exposition is graphic, detailed, and broadly supported. He doesn’t flinch before quite terrifying case material. There is no other |

A Murder Of Crows $15 In A Murder of Crows, Larry D. Thomas has artfully assembled decades of his writing about birds into a single volume of poetry. Thomas divides the collection into four sections. The first, “With Concentrated Grit,” begins with a sparrow that “hops / easily its height, and quietly // explodes into flight… / flaunting for a moment its earth // tone browns and grays.” It ranges through a whole aviary, from sparrows and pigeons (“the urban version / of the buzzard”) to yellow-rumped warblers, house finches, and an old blue jay “arrogant / as a late Picasso, / raging beneath a blanket / at an auction.” Section two, “Eyeing the Gulf,” begins with “the mad / weightless dash” of a sanderling chick’s life and continues through herons that could be “outgrowths / of the river itself” through laughing gulls “in rowdy reverence” through a whole range of seabirds. The third section, “Deft at Tearing Out Hearts,” begins with the eagle for whom “everything that moves / is potential prey” and follows a “trajectory of violence” that includes the hawk “preying for rain” in Presidio whose “only water / was the blood of his prey” and the falcon “praying / his scarlet prayer / of devourment.” The crow, the heart and soul of the collection, is the subject of the final section, which shares its title, “A Murder of Crows,” with the whole. “History reeks,” Thomas writes, with “the ineradicable / blackness” of the crow’s ink. His crow poems speak to the crow “as metaphor, / for thousands / of years, / you’ve charged // our psyches, / forging / the dark iron / of your being // into symbols / of life, death / and the scales / of justice.” Thomas offers the reader a primeval, poetic force appropriate to the terror of our times, “revealing as we breathe / the ravenous, reeking / psyche of our kind” — a fitting tribute to the author of Crow, Ted Hughes, whose work Thomas has long admired, and to whose memory the collection is dedicated. |

Advice and Dissent: The Struggle to Shape the Federal Judiciary $7.68 For better or worse, federal judges in the United States today are asked to resolve some of the nation’s most important and contentious public policy issues. Although some hold onto the notion that federal judges are simply neutral arbiters of complex legal questions, the justices who serve on the Supreme Court and the judges who sit on the lower federal bench are in fact crafters of public law. In recent years, for example, the Supreme Court has bolstered the rights of immigrants, endorsed the constitutionality of school vouchers, struck down Washington D.C.’s blanket ban on handgun ownership, and most famously, determined the outcome of the 2000 presidential election. The judiciary now is an active partner in the making of public policy.Judicial selection has been contentious at numerous junctures in American history, but seldom has it seemed more acrimonious and dysfunctional than in recent years. Fewer than half of recent appellate court nominees have been confirmed, and at times over the past few years, over ten percent of the federal bench has sat vacant. Many nominations linger in the Senate for months, even years. All the while, the judiciary’s caseload grows. Advice and Dissent explores the state of the nation’s federal judicial selection system —a process beset by deepening partisan polarization, obstructionism, and deterioration of the practice of advice and consent.Focusing on the selection of judges for the U.S. Courts of Appeals and the U.S. District Courts, the true workhorses of the federal bench, Sarah A. Binder and Forrest Maltzman reconstruct the history and contemporary practice of advice and consent. They identify the political and institutional causes of conflict over judicial selection over the past sixty years, as well as the consequences of such battles over court appointments. Advice and Dissent offers proposals for reforming the institutions of judicial selection, advocating pragmatic reforms that seek to |

African Voices of the Atlantic Slave Trade: Beyond the Silence and the Shame $8.54 It’s an awful story. It’s an awful story. Why do you want to bring this up now?–Chief Awusa of AtorkorFor centuries, the story of the Atlantic slave trade has been filtered through the eyes and records of white Europeans. In this watershed book, historian Anne C. Bailey focuses on memories of the trade from the African perspective. African chiefs and other elders in an area of southeastern Ghana-once famously called “the Old Slave Coast”-share stories that reveal that Africans were traders as well as victims of the trade. Bailey argues that, like victims of trauma, many African societies now experience a fragmented view of their past that partially explains the blanket of silence and shame around the slave trade. Capturing scores of oral histories that were handed down through generations, Bailey finds that, although Africans were not equal partners with Europeans, even their partial involvement in the slave trade had devastating consequences on their history and identity. In this unprecedented and revelatory book, Bailey explores the delicate and fragmented nature of historical memory. |

All These Vows–Kol Nidre $24.99 People who attend no other services go out of their way to be present on Yom Kippur eve just to hear Kol Nidre chanted. Yet the prayer is in medieval Aramaic, which no one understands, and may not even have a translation supplied, since the prayer’s content defies moral logic. Kol Nidre is a blanket request that God hold us guiltless for vows we make and do not honor! Judaism demands, however, just the reverse. We must honor promises we make. How then did this prayer come into being? Why was it retained? How did it attract such attention that it attracted the most haunting chant in all of Jewish tradition? All These Vows—Kol Nidre examines the prayer’s theology, authorship, and history through a set of lively essays, all written in accessible language by over thirty contributors who span three continents and all major Jewish denominations. They are men and women; scholars and rabbis, artists and poets. Introductory essays trace the actual history of the prayer and attempts through the ages to emend it, downplay it, and even do away with it—all in vain. Kol Nidre remains despite them all, an annual liturgical highlight that is regularly attended even by Jews who disbelieve everything the prayer says. |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Jennie Thlunaut (1892-1986) was a Tlingit artist, who is credited with keeping the art of Chilkat weaving alive and was one of the most celebrated Northwest Coastal master weavers of the 20th century. Jennie Thlunaut, or Shaxsaani Kéek (“Younger Sister of the Girls”), was born in 18 May 1892, 1890, or 1891 She was born in Laxachtaak, in the Jilkaat waan (Chilkat Territory), Southeast Alaska, where she led a typical Tlingit childhood, being outdoors and playing at the beach. She hunted and fished her family, as well as gathered native plant foods, such as berries or wild celery. Jennies parents were Matthew (Yaandakinyeil) and Ester (Yaandakinyeil) Johnson. Jennies mother was Eagle moiety of the Wolf House (Gooch Hít) in Angoon, to which Jennie was born. Jennies father was Gaanaaxteidí clan in the Frog House (Xíxchi Hít) in Klukwan. Jennie grew up in Klukwan in the Frog House. As a young girl Jennie showed interests in making baskets, moccasins, doing beadwork and in weaving by the make-believe games she played with her friends and her mother fostered those interests by teaching her how to do those arts. Jennie has become widely recognized especially for her skill as a Tlingit weaver of Chilkat blankets. She received her first batch of mountain goat hair as a child and her mother taught her weaving when she was only 10 years old. Jennie was married by arrangement at the age of thirteen in 1905 to John James, a Gaanaxteidí man from the Shakes (Shéiksh) family in Wrangell. Jennies parents gave the Chilkat blanket with the frog crest that Jennie and her mother had made in 1902 to John James at their traditional Tlingit wedding. Jennie and John James had three daughters, Kathryn, Edith and Edna. John James became ill |

An Ocean of Air: Why the Wind Blows and Other Mysteries of the Atmosphere $17.95 In 1960, Captain Joseph Kittinger fell to earth from the edge of space and lived. He stepped from the basket of a gigantic helium balloon into an appalling, hostile environment which, without the protection of a pressure suit, would have simultaneously frozen his body and boiled away his blood. It is the air that Kittinger fell through that makes our lives on earth possible.Air is about more than just breathing. Air transforms miraculously into solid food, and without it every creature on earth would starve; it wraps our planet in a blanket of warmth; radio signals bounce off a floating mirror of metal in the air to travel round the world; and the outer layer of our atmosphere soaks up flares from the sun more violent than all the world’s nuclear warheads put together. In this exuberant work, Gabrielle Walker peels back the layers of our atmosphere with stories of the people who uncovered its secrets:• A flamboyant Renaissance Italian discovers how heavy our air really is: The air filling Carnegie Hall, for example, weighs seventy thousand pounds.• A one-eyed barnstorming pilot finds invisible winds [or giant rivers of air?] that blow with the force of a hurricane five miles above our heads.• An impoverished American farmer figures out why storms move in a circle by carving equations with his pitchfork on a barn door.• A well-meaning but ill-fated inventor creates wonder chemicals that nearly destroy the ozone layer (he also came up with the idea to put lead in gasoline [he did the lead first]).• A reclusive mathematical genius with a predilection for painting his toenails cherry red figures out the technology that would come to the rescue of the Titanic. An Ocean of Air is a triumphant celebration of the fragile complexity of Earth’s atmosphere and a completely engaging work of popular science. |

Anaerobic Pre-Treatment of Strong Sewage $66 Many countries in the Middle East and North Africa suffer from water shortage. This partly contributes to the production of concentrated wastewater with COD values higher than 1500 mg/l. Treatment of such concentrated sewage using conventional aerobic treatment options like activated sludge systems will result in the production of considerable amounts of sludge that could be most problematic with respect to handling and final disposal. Conventional aerobic wastewater treatment of such sewage requires high energy demand for aeration and exhibits high operation and maintenance costs. Anaerobic pretreatment of such sewage may present an attractive option in order to reduce sludge production and minimize associated operation and maintenance costs. This book focuses on pretreatment of wastewater produced in Jordan with a special interest in the Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor and some of its modifications. It presents the results of several investigations performed to show the feasibility of applying such a system for treatment of concentrated sewage at fluctuation temperature conditions. The book was first submitted as PhD thesis at Wageningen University. |

Anarchism: A Very Short Introduction $8.95 What do anarchists want? It seems easier to classify them by what they don’t want, namely, the organizations of the State, and to identify them with rioting and protest rather than with any coherent ideology. But with demonstrations like those against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund being blamed on anarchists, it is clear that an explanation of what they do stand for is long overdue. Colin Ward provides answers to these questions by considering anarchism from a variety of perspectives: theoretical, historical, and international, and by exploring key anarchist thinkers, from Kropotkin to Chomsky. He looks critically at anarchism by evaluating key ideas within it, such as its blanket opposition to incarceration, and policy of "no compromise" with the apparatus of political decision-making. Can anarchy ever function effectively as a political force? Is it more "organized" and "reasonable" than is currently perceived? Whatever the politics of the reader, Ward’s argument ensures that anarchism will be much better understood after experiencing this book. |

Aspects of Confused Speech: A Study of Verbal Interaction between Confused and Normal Speakers $78.95 Based on research focusing on the experience of having confused speech and being with confused speakers, this book begins with everyday, commonly understood ideas such as “talking too much” and examines how confused speech is “brought off” as a collaborative activity by the people involved. The author became involved in this project because she was interested in how “confusion” seemed to be something that everyone is not only involved in but also recognizes as part of ordinary life. At the same time, “confusion” is a word that is used somewhat as a blanket category for some people considered permanently incompetent and “set apart” from ordinary members of society. Her study analyzes how talk between confused and normal speakers throws light on this tension. |

BIOFUEL PRODUCTION FROM ORGANIC WASTE $61 We carry out an analysis to evaluate the feasibility of hydrogen and methane production through the anaerobic digestion process of synthetic municipal wastewater in a coupled reactor system in which part of the substrate is solid organic matter. The effect of the synthetic wastewater as a substrate with different organic loads obtained by the addition of glucose to the affluent is analyzed. The processes are analyzed for a system of coupled reactor, one of them is an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) connected to a packed bed reactor (PBR). The effect of different organic loads in the production of hydrogen with specific hydraulic retention time, temperature and pH is compared. The inoculum consisted of a mixture of non-anaerobic inocula and subjected to heat treatment at high temperatures and different intervals with the aim of selecting the hydrogen-producing spore-forming bacteria. It is obtained a lower time for the sludge stabilization compared with other studies reported with a similar system of coupled reactors. The biogas production increased with the increasing organic load. The maximum biogas is obtained as a function of chemical oxygen demand per litter. |

Baby $16.99 Here’s a charming first book for toddlers. Each page is constructed of softly padded cloth and printed with a bright illustration. But the most unusual feature of all is Baby—a five-inch tall cloth doll with a funny face and two different sides. One side of Baby is clad in rompers. Turn Baby over, and you’ll find her wearing only a diaper. Baby is attached to the book by a ribbon, and toddlers will see her first on the book’s front cover, nestled inside a pink blanket. They can take Baby out of the blanket, then open the book and insert her into each of the pictures. She is carried in Mom’s backpack, then she rides on a swing. In other pictures she can sit in a high chair, then in a car seat, ride in a carriage, splash in the tub, and finally into her warm snug crib. Moms will appreciate that this book is washable. |
